only for 1973 and 1974.
The Thing, however, had begun life in 1968 as the Volkswagen Type 181, a light military utility vehicle designed for use by NATO forces.
Civilian versions followed, with different names in various markets, like Trekker in the U.
K.
and Safari in Mexico.
VW drew from its parts bin to create The Thing, using the Karmann-Ghia's wider floorpan and, of course, the Type 1 Beetle's engine.
The Thing used the standard Beetle's torsion bar front suspension, but the Super Beetle's trailing-arm independent rear suspension.
Reduction boxes, or portal axles, on the rear wheels gave it extra ride height and lower overall gearing.
The Thing was about as bare-bones as the Land Rover Series III of the day, using a painted metal interior, detachable plastic windows, and rubber floormats.
The windshield folded flat, and the convertible top could even be fully removed if you had a devil-may-care attitude about pop-up rain showers.
